I am a history teacher and even though I vote Republican, I understood the significance of this even. My fourth period class started shortly after the inauguration began so we took the opportunity to watch this historical event unfold. I think that people in the US, especially in rural US, still had a problem with black people in positions of authority. We have only a couple of black students in our school and for the most part I have never seen anyone treat them poorly or differently than they treat their other classmates. However, when President Obama won the election, I did hear rumbling from parts of the student body and even colleagues about how they weren't sure they would trust this president. Many of the reasons for this distrust was from his age and lack of experience, but it was also apparent that his race had at least something to do with it.
The picture I've posted wasn't from that day, but from the time I traveled to DC with my family and toured the monuments and museums.
