My husband and I were vacationing in the New York area at the time of the attacks. I can vividly see the breathtaking skyline as we flew in on the 8th as it was the first time that I had been in New York City. The morning of the attacks, we had woken up in our hotel room on Long Island and went into the lobby for our breakfast. We sat and watched the terrifying news with several other travelers whom we just met that day (and the bond we created with them was so great that we continue to stay in touch to this day.)
I remember feeling the need to contact all of our family and friends that knew we would be in New York. I felt an incredible sense of helplessness yet wanting to go down to ground zero and help, but we knew we couldn't and we stayed in our hotel that whole day. We were supposed to fly back on Thursday the 13th, but we weren't sure how long they were going to keep all of the flights grounded so we ended up driving our rental car all the way home.

September 11 Attacks: 09/11/2001
The 9/11 attacks were a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States. On that morning, 19 Islamist terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and many others working in the buildings. Both buildings collapsed within two hours, destroying at least two nearby buildings and damaging others. The hijackers crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania, after some of its passengers and flight crew attempted to retake control of the plane, which the hijackers had redirected toward Washington, D.C. There are no survivors from any of the flights.
